How do I set up my computer to use Aber VPN? (Windows 8/10)

You can set up your computer for Aber VPN quickly and easily by letting us do it for you:

  • This will not affect your broadband connection at home.
  • If you use a browser other than Internet Explorer you will need to check it is set up correctly so it can use the University web proxy system ( Chrome / Firefox / Safari)

or

you can manually configure your Aber VPN connection using the following instructions.

  • Right click on the Network Icon on the Taskbar and click Open Network and Sharing Center
  • Click on Set up a new connection or network
  • This should start the Network Connection wizard
  • Select Connect to a workplace and click Next
  • Select No, create a new connection and click Next
  • Click Use my Internet Connection (VPN)

  • If prompted Do you want to set up an Internet connection before continuing?, click I'll set up an Internet connection later
  • Enter the Internet Address as vpn.aber.ac.uk and Destination name Aber VPN .

  • Click Create
  • The list of Network Connections should then appear on the right. If not, click once on the Network icon on the taskbar
  • Right click on Aber VPN and click View Connection Properties
  • Choose the Networking tab
  • Where it says This Network uses the following items click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP/IPv4)
  • Choose Properties
  • Click on Advanced
  • Choose the DNS tab
  • Where its says DNS suffix for this connection add in aber.ac.uk
  • Click OK and OK and OK
  • You must then set up your computer to use the webcache ( How do I do that? ). If you do not do this your VPN connection will not work properly.
  • To use VPN you will need to connect to the Internet using your ISP first
  • Click on the Network Icon on the Taskbar
  • Select Aber VPN and click Connect
  • Enter your full Aberystwyth University email address and password

  • Once you have connected you should see Aber VPN listed as Connected in the networks list.

In addition:

  • You must ensure your computer is secure from virus attacks, hacking and spyware ( How do I do that? )
  • You may set up your computer for use with your University computing account (optional) ( How do I do that? )
