How do I create a marking grid in Turnitin? (Staff)

Turnitin has four different types of rubrics/marking grids that you can set up and used to help evaluate the students work. These rubrics enable you to define criteria that you mark against:

  • Standard Rubric:
Each criteria are weighted using percentages, and each scale as a mark allocated to it. The overall mark is calculated based on the percentage weighting of the criteria and the scale mark allocated for that criteria. e.g. in the example below 3 = excellent, 2 = average and 1 = poor. Once all the criteria have a scale allocated, a mark is automatically calculated based on the weightings and the overall grade that is available for the assignment.

  • Custom Rubric
The criteria are not weighted, but marks are allocated for each scale description. The overall grade is based on the mark selected for each criteria. There is not the option to add ranges, only specific marks, the system doesn't allow you to add a top mark of 100 - it's capped at 99.

  • Qualitative Rubric
No weighting or marks can be applied, the scales and criteria are used to provide guideline feedback. Each number below relates to a scale e.g. 1 = excellent 2 = good etc
Each criteria and scale can have general feedback/descriptions added.

  • Grading Forms
These can be used to provide free form feedback based on each criteria. You can set the criteria, and then add individual comments for each student.
