How do I use the OfficeExtend access points?

cisco 600 ap

The Office Extender access point is an alternative to using VPN to access Aberystwyth resources at home.

Getting Started

Connect the access point to your home broadband router:

  • Insert the Ethernet cable into the WAN port on the back of the access point
  • Insert the other end of the cable into a free Ethernet socket in the back of your home broadband router
  • Connect the power cable into the back of the access point and power outlet
  • Ensure the power switch is turned on at the back of the access point
  • Ensure your home broadband router is turned on and connected to the Internet

When the device is connected to both the power and the Ethernet for the first time, the device may need to update. This will be indicated by the central light on the front of the device flashing orange.

The central light will flash a variety of colours to display information about the status of the device. Information about the meaning of these colours can be found on the quick reference guide, included with the device.

Wireless

The OfficeExtend will broadcast Eduroam, the same network that is used on campus.

  • Follow the Getting Started procedure above
  • Connect to Eduroam wirelessly as normal ( How do I do that? )

Wired

The Office Extender has a port on the back that will act the same as a network socket on campus.

  • Follow the Getting Started procedure above
  • Connect your laptop/computer to Port 4 (remote LAN) on the back of the access point using an Ethernet cable
  • Register your MAC address for use by contacting Information Services ( How do I do that? )
  • You should be able to connect your computer to the network within an hour of registering your MAC address

If you have any problems please contact Information Services ( How do I do that? )

Cisco IP (VoIP) phone

Using the same port used to connect a computer, the Office Extender can allow you to use an office phone at home.

  • Follow the Getting Started procedure above
  • Connect your VoIP Phone to Port 4 (remote LAN) to the back of the access point using an Ethernet cable
  • Wait three minutes for the phone to register and check for a dial tone
  • If you have a computer to use as well, this will need to be connected to the back of the phone

If you have any problems please contact Information Services ( How do I do that? )
