How do I connect my games console or smart TV to the student network?

To connect your games console or smart TV on the AU network you will need to:

  • Find the wired MAC address of your device -  the MAC address is made up of 12 characters e.g. 00:11:22:AA:66:DD.
    • To find the MAC address on Playstation 3 - Navigate to Settings>Network Setings>Settings and and Connection Status List (Wired Connection)
    • To find the MAC address on Xbox 360 -  Navigate to System Settings>Network Settings> Configure Network>Additional Settings>Advanced Settings>Wired MAC
    • To Find the MAC address on Playstation 4 - Navigate to Settings>Network>View Connection Status>MAC Address (LAN Cable)
    • To Find the MAC address on Xbox One - Navigate to Settings>Network>Advanced Settings>Wired MAC
  • Register this MAC address with Information Services (How do I do that?)
  • Wait 15 minutes before plugging in your console or smart TV

Please note:

  • The University operates a fair usage policy on the network giving each user a download quota of 30GB in 24 hours. The hours between 3am and 9am are not included in this quota so you should set any large downloads to complete in this time period. (More information here)
  • You may need to open ports in the University firewall for your game to work (How do I do that?)
  • If games use peer to peer technology (for example Call of Duty or any Source engine game with a server browser) then these games will not work on the network.
  • A list of commonly opened ports can be found on the Aberystwyth gaming societies' (ACOG) website (Where can I find this?)
