How do I choose a suitable password?

Your password must contain a random collection of letters and numbers, that you can remember and that only you know.

Your password must be:

  • between 8 and 64 characters long
  • contain at least 5 unique characters
  • contain at least one letter
  • contain at least one number
  • nothing like a real word in any language
  • nothing like any password you have used at Aberystwyth University before

You can use the following non-alphanumeric characters: ! @ # : ? > < , . / ; ' ` [ = - \ ] ) & ( ^*_+{ ~|}

You must not

  • use the number keypad on the right hand side of the keyboard
  • use any recognisable combination of characters, for example:
    • post codes
    • national Insurance or passport numbers
    • car registration numbers
    • dictionary words in any language
    • names, logins, or abbreviations
    • personal information

The easiest way to create a password is to think of a phrase, saying or other sentence; take the initial letter from each word and add/substitute a number e.g.:
