How do I install a softphone on my computer?

To use a softphone on your computer you will need:

  • a softphone license. You can obtain a license by contacting Information Services (How do I do that?)
  • to be a member of AU staff registered to use a VOIP phone
  • a connection to the University network, either on campus or off campus using VPN (How do I do that?). Please note - if you want to use the soft phone at home it may not work if your Broadband speed is less than 512 kbps.
  • a sound card
  • a standard headphone set with a microphone. These are available to purchase from Information Services.
  • a license to use the software on your computer. Please contact Information Services (How do I do that?).

To install the software:

  • Download the Cisco Jabber softphone:
  • Install the software and log in using your AU username and password.
  • If jabber does not automatically connect to the server, click advanced settings and tick the Cisco IM and Presence tick box, select Use the following server at the bottom and enter jabber.aber.ac.uk.  Then click save and try again.
  • If you receive any further popups you should click Accept

  • After logging in, click the computer screen or phone icon at the bottom left and select Use my computer for calls
