I think I have a virus on my computer, what should I do?
- make sure you have up to date virus checking software
- install up to date virus checking software if it isn't (How do I install antivirus on my personal computer)
- scan for viruses
If a virus is reported you should:
- Choose the option to Clean up or Delete the virus when it is detected by your virus checking software
- If you do not feel confident enough to remove the virus yourself please Contact Information Services
If no virus is reported it could be that:
- you were not infected
- it was a hoax. Try doing an internet search for the subject line of the email, or the name given for the virus the email, or any other significant phrase in the search box and click search. This will may tell you if the alert is a hoax and if you need to take any action.
- you have a new virus not yet recognised by your Anti-Virus. You should Contact Information Services
- your computer may be faulty for a reason not associated with a virus. For University owned computers please Contact Information Services
