Why do we have to register our attendance at lectures?

Aberystwyth University operates a system which allows students to register their attendance at timetabled lectures, seminars and practicals.

This system has a number of benefits:

For the Student

  • Attendance at lectures, seminars and practicals is an important indicator of student engagement with their course and their academic achievement. Non-attendance can be an indicator of other issues a student may be having. To try to ensure the best academic outcomes for our students, Aberystywth University asks students to record their attendance so that any issues can be identified and addressed at the earliest opportunity.

For the Department

  • In some departments attendance at lectures, seminars and practicals is a compulsory element of the course. This system provides an automated, paper-free and more efficient method of recording that attendance.

For the Institution

  • The system provides useful statistical information on room utilisation and allows a comparison between actual use of the teaching rooms and the timetabled activities. This can help us to better plan teaching spaces to meet demand and to deal with over-booking or poor practice with regards to cancelling activities.
  • The University is required to report attendance to various external bodies (e.g. the Home Office for international students with study visas)
