How do I change a users password?

  • Ask them for photo id to confirm their identity
  • Acceptable ID would be:
    • Aber card
    • Photo driving licence
    • Passport or European identity card
    • If you have access to AStRA or IDM you can use the photo there as id
    • If you cannot confirm their identity DO NOT change the password but ask them to return with photo id.
  • Go to https://reg.aber.ac.uk, and login
  • Find their account:
    • By Username: Type their username in the search box. The search criteria field is set to Username by default
    • By Surname: Type their surname in the search box and change the search criteria field to Surname using the drop down box. Note the default search is only the first 50 records so if it is a common surname you will need to
      change this.
    • By Student number: Type their student number in the search box and change the search criteria field to Student/Staff number
  • Check the account is active:
    • If the top of their record displays a green bar and says Active, you can proceed
    • If the top of their record displays a red bar and says Inactive you need to activate the account
    • If the top of their record displays a red bar and says Locked or Invalid contact the IT Service Desk
  • Click on Change Password
  • Pass the keyboard to the user and ask them to type in a new password  - see passwords rules
  • Do not let them write their username and password down together on the same piece of paper
  • Advise them that they will not be able to log in for about 10 minutes
