How do I complete the set up of two-step verification for my Office 365 account?

To complete the setup you will need to choose your authentication method

  • Login to from a PC
  • You will be prompted to provide More Information:
  • Click Next
  • You will be asked to choose your verification method from the following:

1. Mobile app

  • Recommended if you use a smart phone
  • If you don't already have one, download an authenticator app from your App store. We recommend you use the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  • From the Additional security verification screen in webmail on your PC, follow the instructions to add your Office365 account into this app
  • You can choose:
    • Receive notifications for verification - you will receive a popup notfication on your phone that you can either Approve or Deny. You will also automatically receive the verification option below as a backup method when choosing notifications
    • Use verification code - you will need to input the code displayed in the app when you login to your account. This option will work even if you don't have mobile signal.
  • Once you have completed the setup you will need to verify any requests to login to your Office 365 account from off-campus using the app on your mobile phone.

2. Authentication phone

  • If you choose to receive a verification code by text message - a new code will be text to your mobile phone when you try to login to your Office 365 account from off-campus. You will need to enter this code as part of the login process
  • If you choose Call me you will receive an automated phone call from Microsoft asking you to verify your login.
  • Once you have chosen your preferred option please follow the setup instructions on the Additional security verification screen in webmail on your PC.

3. Office phone

  • This option is not available as it does not allow you to add the dialling code and the full AU number needed for dialling from off-campus.
  • If you wish to use your Office phone to verify your Office 365 account please choose Authentication phone, choose Call me and add your full AU number as though dialling it from off-campus.

Please note

  • You will need to complete the setup to access Webmail, SharePoint, Teams, Skype on campus. This only needs to be done once
  • Once setup has been completed you will only need to use the 2-step verification when accessing your account off campus
  • If you use your mobile device to check your Aberystywth University email you need to update your authentication settings using the instructions here -
  • Microsoft applications will prompt you for 2-step verification off-campus as and when needed.
  • You can change your authentication method at any time (How do I do that?)
