How can I remote desktop from my Mac at home to my Mac at work

You can use the built in screen share facility on your Mac to connect to your Mac workstation, as long as both computers are on campus, or you are connected to the VPN.

Before you leave campus:

  • Set up VPN on your personal device so that you can connect to the University network while you are off-campus: https://faqs.aber.ac.uk/index.php?id=2764
  • Enable screen sharing on your mac on campus, and copy your VNC address
    • Open system preferences
    • Click sharing
    • Tick screen sharing
    • Make a note of the VNC address shown on screen, you will need it to remotely connect to your computer.

When you are off campus:

  • Enable screen sharing on your Mac at home - it needs to be enabled on both devices
    • Open system preferences
    • Click sharing
    • Tick screen sharing
  • Connect to the VPN
    • Open Global Protect
    • Enter your username, password and One Time Password
  • Open Finder, and click GO from the top menu and click Connect to Server

  • Enter the VNC address of the Mac that you want to connect to

  • Click Connect
  • Enter the username and password that you normally use to connect to your Mac on campus
