Can I use Zoom at Aberystwyth University?

The use of Zoom is not supported by Information Services.

There are privacy and security concerns around the Zoom app, particularly around the collection of personal data and unauthorised access to content.

Microsoft Teams is the IS-supported and GDPR-compliant tool available to staff and students for video calls and online meetings. Any discussions containing personal data should not be conducted outside of this environment.

More details on Teams is available at: https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/is/it-services/microsoftteams/.

If there are genuine technical or functionality reasons for using Zoom or other non-supported apps, departments will need to make a case on an ad hoc basis.  Staff would need to work through the Privacy Impact Assessment Screening Form and, in most cases, a full Privacy Impact Assessment (https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/information-governance/dp/pias/). The business case, outlining the technical and / or functional case (approved by Head of Department), and Privacy Impact Assessment should be sent to both lteu@aber.ac.uk and infogovernance@aber.ac.uk. We will then work together to assess the risks and benefits before approving purchase.
