How do I avoid spam and what should I do if I receive it?
To avoid spam you should:
- Refrain from giving your email address away on websites when signing on for a free service unless you are sure the site is genuine. Lists can be created from all the names that sign up for a free service, and used to send spam mail. This list may also be resold to other spam sites. If you do use your email address on a webpage - make sure you opt not to be contacted about offers etc.
- Refrain from using your Aberystwyth University email address for activity that is not related to your job
If you still receive spam remember:
- You can adjust your spam filter settings
- If the email is 'phishing' for your Aberystwyth University email address and password you can forward the email to is@aber.ac.uk so we can block the webpage.
- Don't reply - even if there is an unsubscribe link within the email - this just lets the sender know you are checking mail at that address and it will encourage more spam.
- Don't react - don't let unsolicited emails bother you. They are not directed at you personally - everyone receives them.
- Delete it - If possible, treat the message as a nuisance and delete it as soon as you realise what it is. Don’t waste time or get upset by reading it all - just acknowledge that such mail is a fact of electronic life (as is the junk mail you get through the post).
