  • When you have said your name, click the Stop button

  • You can then listen to the recording.
  • When you are happy with it, Click Done.

We suggest that you speak clearly and slowly so that someone listening to your name can hear it clearly.  You should also make sure that the name you use is correctly noted in Blackboard, before recording the pronunciation.

Blackboard uses the ‘known as’ name noted in your Student / Staff record – for information on how to set this have a look at the FAQ How do I update my ‘known as’ name.

To set your pronouns

  • Login to Blackboard
  • Click on your name on the left-hand side of the screen
  • You can either add them from the Add Pronunciation link or use the Add Pronouns link.
  • If the pronouns you use are not available, click on the Make a Request link to suggest a new set be added. Requests to add new pronouns will be discussed with the university’s EDI officer.

To hear someone else’s pronunciation / view pronouns (Staff)

  • Go into a Course or Organisation
  • Click on View everyone on your course
  • You will see a purple speaker icon next someone’s name if they have recorded their name. You’ll also see their pronouns on that page too

Note that audio name badges and pronouns are also available in Office 365. It’s not possible to share information between the two systems, so you will need to set up pronunciation and pronouns in both systems (see FAQ on setting up pronouns in Office 365) and FAQ on setting up name pronunciation in Office 365)

To hear someone else’s pronunciation / view pronouns (Students)

You’ll be able to view details of anyone who is in a course group with you or who has posted to a discussion board

  • Go into a Course or Organisation
  • Click on Groups or Discussion at the top of the page
